Innovative agriculture and horticulture

Bonaire has the ambition to be self-sufficient when it comes to food production. This is why Estate Bolivia offers space for Innovative, sustainable agriculture and horticulture.

Nearly all of the food in Bonaire still has to be imported, which is expensive and not sustainable. Because of this, the island’s government encourages local agriculture, horticulture, cattle farming, and fishing. At Estate Bolivia, areas are reserved for agricultural activities. The application of innovative, sustainable methods (such as aquaculture) will be stimulated.

“For instance, by researching what types of vegetables and fruits will provide the best results in Bonaire’s climate”

Universities

The Universiteit of Wageningen helps the island in the development of an active agricultural policy. For instance, by researching what types of vegetables and fruits will provide the best results in Bonaire’s climate. The way in which the areas reserved for agriculture at Estate Bolivia will be used shall be decided in collaboration with the island’s LVV service.
